BETTER OUTCOMES 2 !!
2019 Ride! What a year
Our colony of riders primarily raised over $100,000 dollars this year! Most of the funds we raise goes to the Dr. Michele Williams Oral Cancer Research & Education Fund at the British Columbia Cancer Agency. Some of our riders dedicated their funds to occular cancer research. Together we are making a difference!
Nine years ago Drs. Michele Williams and Catherine Poh started the team to raise money for oral cancer research. This type of cancer is close to their hearts as they were both oral medicine and oral pathology specialists at the BC Cancer Agency. Not only do we raise money for oral cancer research but we also want to raise awareness.
Unfortunately, in 2015 Michele lost her battle with cancer. Posthumously the BC Cancer Agency established a fund in her name, the Dr. Michele Williams Oral Cancer Research and Education Fund. All of us ride in honour of Michele and all that she has done for dentistry in British Columbia. In tribute to all that Michele had done for our team, the name was changed from Better Outcomes to Better Outcomes 2. If you cannot ride with us please help support oral cancer research by donating to one of our riders.
In 2016 one of our team captains rode in a Ziggy Stardust-inspired outfit. This was to pay tribute to David Bowie who had lost his fight with cancer that year. The getup, especially the psychedelic wig zap-strapped to the helmet, was a huge hit both for fundraising and during the ride.
Not to be outdone, the following year the rest of the team decided to embrace a superhero theme and ride as Batmen and Batwomen. In an ironic twist of fate, soon after we embraced the Batman-theme for our ride the actor Adam West lost his fight with cancer. Mr. West was famous for his role as Batman on US television in the 1960’s. Cancer is an indiscriminate killer and we are doing our best to turn the tables in our favour. We paid tribute to Adam West that year. The bat-theme was such a success that we are now and forever will be the most bat-tastic team in the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer. Who does not look good riding with bat ears on their helmet? So why not be a superhero in the fight against cancer and join the best dressed team in the 2019 B.C. Ride to Conquer Cancer?
The Ride is an experience unlike any other, and we will be there to support you every step of the way. Your teammates will become your biggest cheerleaders. We will make sure that you’re ready to take on the physical challenge of riding over 200km as well as help you achieve, or even exceed, your fundraising goal. Most importantly, we will do it together.
Starting in the spring of 2020 our team will have training rides on Tuesday evenings in Richmond and Sunday mornings in Vancouver and sometimes in the valley. We also host social events to help you raise funds for your ride. Please help us take a big bite out of cancer and join our team.
In 2018 Marc Schouten, a co-captain of our team, tore his right Achilles heel. Our team leaves neither bat nor man behind. Marc modified a tandem bike so he could pedal with his left leg. Mark Sherrington and Joel Fransen shared duties with Marc on the modified tandem so he could not only finish the 2018 but ride but indeed conquer it!
It is true our team has a lot of dentists and those in the dental field riding with us, but we also have a lot of non-dentites too. All are welcome on our team but be forewarned there is a lot of tooth talk and flossing happening all the time.
We know you want to go with us, you know you want to go, and that is no guano! You would be truly batty to ride with any other team so sign-up now for the most bat-tastic team and together we will make a difference!
