Eric's Ride A Bike For Two Days To Raise Money For Cancer Research Page
I reached out to many of you two years ago to sponsor me in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. My good long- time friend Daryl Clark had just passed away from prostate cancer and I was sad and angry.
At that time I said I would only do this ride once and that I wanted a life time of giving and boy did you give (all told $240,000).
We were focused on the Heidelberg project, a treatment that has really evolved in the last two years. This was a passion project of my good late friend Daryl, as well as the leader of our Daryl’s Heidelberg Hope team, Alex Blodgett. Their combined efforts leveraged the support from the ride with individual giving. All told the effort resulted in 20 million dollars of focused research spending on this project. While more research is required, the treatment is well advanced and is saving lives.
So why am I telling you this? Late in the day I have decided that I am going to do the ride again this year. I am compelled to do so. Cancer keeps coming. It keeps attacking my friends.
I ride for Rob, who learned that his prostate had gone rogue, several months after finishing the 2017 ride. I ride for Paul, whose bladder got hit, aggressively, months after retiring from a life time of contribution. I ride for Don, who never gives up and just keeps on going. I ride for Rod, who leads the hope, all the while managing his affliction. I ride for Grant who inspires me. I ride for Donna, who has lost friends and a sister and struggles for hope. I ride for Bud, who lies in mind numbing pain in his post chemo bed. I ride for Janine, who dodged the bullet. I ride for Harold, who beat it, but whose heart paid a price. I ride for Greg, who got hit two years ago, and fights the fight. I ride for Bob, an inspiration to many, who after a full life of passionate service, is painfully hit. I ride for Daryl, Brent, Doreen, Doug, Harald, Steve-O and dozens of others who didn’t make it. I ride for Alex because it’s the least I can do. I ride for the families who endure and support, who carry the buckets and mops, to wash away the sweat, the tears, and the fears. I ride for my friends. I ride for my family. I ride for you.
I ride again, because cancer keeps on coming. I ride because it is relentless. I ride for its eradication. And so I ride. And so I ask you to give. Maybe not a lifetime of giving like in 2017….maybe half a life time’s worth? I know I said I would only ride that one time. I meant it then, but this disease just keeps coming back. And so here I am….coming back.
The Daryl Heidelberg Hope Team has merged with the Cancer Derailleurs by Harbour Air Team….With the Heidelberg program now well-funded we are focusing on funding for progressing early detection through blood samples rather than expensive, invasive and painful biopsies – the earlier cancer is detected, the earlier it can be stopped!
No amount is too great. No amount is too small.
Act now. If you procrastinate your good intentions will be wasted. Get your credit card out, click on the "Donate to Eric" button below, and make it happen. Do it for me, for you, for your friends for your family, and for your community.
The progress made through your giving will save someone’s life, maybe someone very close to you, maybe even you……or me.
I thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter and for taking the time to give.
Enjoy each day. All the best always,
