Terry's Tiny Trekker!
Welcome to Mandy Chow's Ride page!
The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation is a transformational cycling journey, spanning over two days and over 200 kilometres. In August 2018, I'll be taking on the scenic Pacific Northwest in solidarity and promise to show that cancer is no match against our conviction to conquer it!
Funds raised through The Ride for the BC Cancer Foundation will support cancer research, treatment, and services at the BC Cancer Agency, a leader in cancer research and treatment.
Reason Why I Ride: MY WONDERFUL, ONE-OF-A-KIND FATHER, TERRY CHOW!
Terry was first diagnosed with B-Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in November 2008 at age 46. We were all surprised to say the least. He rocked a head-full of black hair, played badminton regularly, ate a balanced diet, and was only ever out of breath when laughing at my brother, Ryan, and I. Though nervous, we were confident in both science and Terry.
He underwent 4 gruelling months of chemotherapy at Princess Margaret Hospital. For the next couple of years, he was considered to be in remission and continued with regular check-ups. Flash forward to February 2014, a bump on his right elbow was biopsied and confirmed the cancer was back. He was just shy of his 5 year milestone.
Terry's next treatment steps included a stem cell transplant and GDP chemotherapy - both were a success and he was cleared. He began feeling pain in his right shoulder in 2016; once biopsied, it was confirmed the lymphoma was back yet again. Terry started his first clinical trial in August 2016, which helped to shrink the tumour to undetectable levels on CT and PET scans. 5 month later, he was unable to move his right shoulder and doctors confirmed the tumour had started growing. After 3 weeks of daily radiation treatment, Terry decided to try another clinical trial in June 2017. It worked for a few cycles, however the tumour began to grow again. His options now were to begin another clinical trial which consisted of a daily IV drip at the hospital or palliative chemotherapy. The fight still isn't over!
Update: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry Chow, on December 31st 2017 after a courageous 9-year battle with cancer.
Science has already brought us this far, but we need your support to fully conquer cancer. I've already got my bike, helmet and silly spandex, but to guarantee my ride success, I need your help today!
