Welcome to My Personal Journey
Please Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Welcome to my Personal Page! The Ride to Conquer Cancer presented by Silver Wheaton benefiting BC Cancer Foundation, is a two-day cycling journey, through the beautiful Pacific region taking place in the summer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!
My first personal experience of cancer came as my mum succumbed to Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung carcinoma in 2000. She didn't even get any treatment as she just went downhill quickly after biopsy. I felt cheated and a failure as she wasn't even given a chance to fight. Despite being a School Director and Administrator of a huge university, I was powerless to stop it. My response was to learn as much as I can about this dreadful disease and specialized in oncology at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London, England which is the Centre for Cancer Excellence in Europe, in the hopes of supporting people going through the same crises. I developed a passion for haemato-oncology as I was drawn to how acute these cancers behave, how technical and highly specialized the treatments are, how massively destabilizing the disease trajectory could be and how innocent lives, both young and old alike, strong and weak, healthy or not, are taken away just like that.
Many more patients, colleagues, friends and family did get affected and continue to navigate the hard journey of treatment, palliation, remission and death through the years. My hope is that we help raise more funds to support life-saving research of BC Cancer so individualized, and targetted care with less side effects are discovered for those going through these.
I didn't even have a bike when I initially signed up in a whim on a faithful day in May 2016. I just sincerely wanted to help. I bought a bike, trained with a team despite my fear of the open road, fundraised more than $3000 in a month, and served as medic captain for 2 years in a row. I made a significant difference by just putting myself out there, conquering my fears and going above and beyond saving lives on a daily basis in the ICU.
A few weeks ago, I embarked on another challenging spiritual-physical journey and did the Camino de Santiago de Compostela from Porto, Portual to Santiago, Spain then Finisterre and Muxia, close to 300 kms of walking/trekking whilst I sprained my right ankle and literally limped my way from day 3 onwards. Not sure if I can ride on my bike soon but I have never given up on anything really. Determination, faith and commitment have always seen me through anything I embark on. With your help, I can still put myself out there, once more and be my brother's keeper. Please open your heart and donate. Together, we can do this!
Thank you in advance for your help.
