Welcome to my Personal Page!
I was a very late addition to Team Ovcare, and with this being my first Ride to Conquer Cancer, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The event had 2 route options from Vancouver to Seattle - a 250km route, and a 300km route with some extra pizazz in the foothills of the Cascade mountain range. Since the road bike has some experience with the North Shore mountains, I felt as the fork in the road approached, I had to give the 300 a stab. The route didn't let down and the group of riders thinned out promtly as we hit the hills. Going with the "get out of the saddle and keep the head down" plan of attack, I felt I was going pretty well. That was until I stopped seeing route signs and realised nobody was behind/in front of me! A U-turn, some choice words and a few km's later I got back on route and hit the climbs I thought I had already conquered. Shout out to the nice Polish man/windbreaker that helped get me back on track. :) It was a long couple days in the saddle to say the least but with the support from crew, volunteers and supporters it helped eveyone get through the mileage. The event was well organised every pedal of the way and I will plan to participate again next year.
All that being said, the aim of the event is to raise funds that will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and globally. Everyone has their own unique experience with the disease. Personally, I never got to enjoy a conversation with my grandfather Fergus who died of colon cancer years ago, and recently, my grandmother Bridie passed from lung cancer. This ride was in memory of them.
