Help Me Fight Cancer
Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
I am very excited to let you know that this year will be my first participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer! I'm sure by now many of you know what it is, but if you don't it's a two day, 250km bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle with thousands of other riders and volunteers participating.
My personal experience with cancer has been, to say the least, extensive. For those who may not know, my mom, Pamela Balfour, was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer called Medulloblastoma, which is common in children, but rare in adults. She was first diagnosed in 1999 but fought and after a year of treatment went into remission. Unfortunately it returned and she passed away in 2005 when I was 8 and my sister was 6.
In July 2010 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), and underwent a chemotherapy and treatment cycle of roughly 40 months. During that time I suffered from a number of side-effects from the treatments and medication, including kidney stones, pancreatitis, mucositis, and appendicitis. I also experienced the exceptional support from my family, friends, and the BC Children's Hospital.
However, as many of you know, experiences with cancer are not usually limited to only one or two cases. Unfortunately I know or have known many other people affected by the disease.
That is why I'm riding.
I'm riding for all the lives lost to cancer.
I'm riding for the patients still fighting, for the doctors, nurses and researchers who spend their lives fighting as well.
I'm riding because research works, I'm a walking, or should I say riding, example of that.
I'm riding because I believe in the work the BC Cancer Foundation is doing, and I have experienced it firsthand.
I'm riding because together we can beat cancer.
The ride won't be easy - I know that, but compared to what people fighting cancer are going through, its seems like the least I can do.
Please donate to my ride. Thank you.
