Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Hi Friends and Family!
This August, I will be riding in the Ride to Conquer Cancer from Vancouver to Seattle to raise funds for brain cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency. I am riding on Team Courage for Lisa alongside the Smith family, in honour of their incredible wife and mom.
Although I haven’t lived in Vancouver in the last 12 years, the Smith family has been and remains an important part of my life. I met Sam in gym class on the first day of high school, and from meeting that day, we were an inseparable duo for the next five years. Her mom Lisa was the loving mother to five active kids, and the backbone to an extremely busy household. I spent most of my lunch breaks in her kitchen, not to mention time after school and on weekends. The Smith house was filled with family, friends, and fun and I always felt I had a place in it.
When Sam called to tell me that her mom had been diagnosed with a brain tumour, I was crushed. It seemed impossible. Lisa was one of the most active of people. She was always playing soccer, riding her bike, going on hikes, to the gym, to yoga, or running from one of her kid’s activities to the next. She was energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate about everything she did. She loved and was loved.
My experience with Lisa’s cancer wasn’t directly with Lisa, but through Sam. Knowing Sam for so many years still didn’t prepare me for how strong, brave, and incredibly stoic she was over the next year and three months. In such adversity, she remained positive, always showing Lisa so much love and support.
I am riding to honour Lisa, and to raise funds to find a cure for a disease that no family should have to endure. If Lisa were here, she would be riding alongside us, organizing team photos and the party at the finish line. She will be with us in spirit through the entire event. It’s a privilege to participate with the Smiths, and I sincerely appreciate your support!
