Welcome to My Personal Page
Welcome to my Personal Page! The Ride to Conquer Cancer presented by Silver Wheaton benefiting BC Cancer Foundation, is a two-day cycling journey, through the beautiful Pacific region taking place in the summer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!
Contribute to this powerful movement with a donation. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
I will be honoring a strong and courageous woman, Lisa Smith, by joining her family and friends on the “Courage for Lisa Team” this August 26 & 27 in the Ride to Conquer Cancer fundraising bicycle ride from Vancouver to Seattle; a 155 mile ride with thousands of riders.
Who was Lisa and how do I know her? My friend Margo Forstrom and I have ridden The Courage Classic three times, raising money for a local hospital’s child abuse program. The ride spanned three days, crossing three mountain-passes in Washington State, and it took lots of endurance and good spirits. We last rode this in 2012 when Margo’s sister, Lisa, Lisa’s husband Rob, and two of their four children, Hannah and Joel, all from Vancouver, BC - joined our team. They didn’t just join our team – they rocked it, as they are all athletes who love cycling, and gave Margo and I the encouragement and enthusiasm we needed to meet the challenge of those long mountain -passes with gusto. Lisa was diagnosed with an aggressive brain Cancer in April 2015 and despite doing everything possible to slow or reverse the effects of the tumor, she passed away last July 26, 2016 at age 57. So, I wish to thank her and honor her for being the strong. Effervescent, supportive woman she was and learn more about her through the stories I will hear along the way.
The monies raised will benefit the British Columbia Cancer Agency whose mission is to reduce the incidence of cancer, reduce the mortality of cancer and improve the quality of life for those living with cancer and support leading-edge research for prevention and cure of brain cancer.
Why should you support a Canadian agency? Because cancer does not recognize international boundaries and neither do cancer research efforts, so funds to support this Ride to Conquer Cancer will aid all cancer research efforts everywhere.
In addition to riding for Lisa, I will ride for those I have lost to cancer: Sally, my mother; Annie, her sister; Nina, my mother-in-law; and my friends Joey, Theresa, and Debby. And I will ride for those who have been diagnosed with cancer: Margo, my cycling buddy; Peter, my husband; and many friends including Joanne B, Anna K, John S, Mike, Debbie A; Lauren C; Mark R; Bill C; Bill DL; and Rick C.
I sincerely appreciate any donations you can make to this ride on my behalf, making this a joint effort to find a cure for cancer.
Warmly,
Janet
