Eric Carlson's Page. Why I ride this ride.
I am writing to you today with passion. Real, true, gut wrenching, emotional passion. I want you to read this message. All of it. It's easy to skip after reading the first paragraph or delete entirely, but on this email, from me, Eric, to you, my friend and my friend's friends, I want you to read the whole thing.
I am participating in this year's Ride to Conquer Cancer on the Daryl's Heidelberg Hope Team. I am riding for Daryl Clark and his hope (and everybody else affected by this insidious disease). He was my friend. He passed away on June 17, 2017 at the age of 59, decades ahead of schedule from metastasized prostate cancer. He fought hard. He gave hope. He made me proud. He was the inspiration for our team. He was supposed to be here to help lead us.
I hate crowds and don't like riding with a bunch of people around me. I like space and freedom, like my friend Daryl. I don't do the ride. I prefer to sponsor people. But this year is different. This year I am on a personal mission. And the mission is more important than my comfort. I must do this ride. I must support this cause. I must reinforce this hope.
That cancer is an insidious disease is well known. That new treatments are being created all the time is lesser known. Most treatments are about easing through it, few are about eradicating it. And this later point, eradication, was Daryl's dream, the point of his fight. And it is on this point that I focus my passion.
A bold new treatment, that Daryl and his friends nicknamed Daryl's Heidelberg Hope, originated in Munich, Germany and is yet to be established in BC and North America generally. The treatment entails a radioactive element, Lutetium, which gets chemically bound to a certain antibody, and is then injected by IV . This solution, upon injection, circulates through the entire body, attaches itself to cancer cells and, simply, kills them - kills them wherever they reside – bones, lymph nodes, soft tissue organs or simply in the blood stream. It was Daryl's dream that this new treatment be made available in BC for all cancer patients.
Our team, also named Daryl's Heidelberg Hope, is determined to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, to help make Daryl's dream a reality. We have an agreement with the BC Cancer Foundation that any funds we raise will be contributed directly to this new treatment for BC cancer patients.
And so now I ask. I want you to sponsor me and my team in this ride. I want you to give. I am impolite. I am unapologetic. I want you to dig deep. This will be the only time I do this ride and the only time I ask. I want you to give me a lifetime's worth of asks. I want you to give with sacrifice. I want you to give with passion. I want you to give from you. I want you to get your employer, business, union or personal network to give. I want you to forward this email to your friends, and get them to give. I want us to make a bold statement. I want us to smash my donation expectations, like I want to smash cancer.
No amount is too small, no amount is too big, but whatever the amount, double it. Give for Daryl. Give for others this insidious disease has taken life or hope from. Give for the people this disease lies in wait for ….your friends, your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins….give for you….. no one is immune. Give up some wine, give up some savings, give up some comfort, what the heck, give up a car to advance the steps towards total eradication. Give for Daryl's Heidelberg Hope.
Thanks for reading. Please step up. Do it now by clicking on the donate button. Have your steaming hot credit card ready….set…..Go! Then forward to your friends, your business partners, and anyone else you feel like with a note from you encouraging them to give.
Respectfully and with thanks,
