Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
This August I will be riding 250 KM from Vancouver to Seattle in support of Daryl's Heidleburg Hope Team. Over the past year I have been welcomed into the Clark family in a way that I could have never expected. It has been a difficult yet inspiring year, seeing Daryl and his family fight against this disease every day.
Since his diagnosis of stage four metistatic prostate cancer, in which he was given only 1-3 years to live, Daryl has fought hard through every standard of care treatment availible in British Columbia. The BC Cancer Agency is one of the best in the world, however, after three years of battling Daryl has exhausted all available options in Canada. In May of this year, Joanna and Daryl flew to Germany to recieve treatment which is seeing groundbreaking results.
This is a new treatment developed in Germany, that has had tremendous efficacy rates, and we want to bring it to BC. 75% of patients who were given two to four months to live were not only alive six months after receiving the treatment, but their tumours had shrunk and they had lower levels of PSMA in their blood. In layman’s terms, the treatment is a radiopharmaceutical that is injected by IV. The IV is loaded with a radioactive element (Lutetium) that has been chemically bound to a certain antibody.
This combination, upon injection, circulates throughout the body attaching itself to cancer cells and killing them. Perhaps most encouraging, this treatment kills cancer cells wherever they reside – the bones, lymph nodes, soft tissue organs or simply in the bloodstream. Daryl suffers from three of these four indications and has been told (repeatedly) that his situation will get worse.
I have personally seen the effect that this terrible disease has had on both Daryl and his family. I have also, however, seen the strength and love that close family and friends have given to the Clarks, and how it encourages Daryl to keep fighting against all odds. This new drug has the opportunity to give that hope to so many Canadians who are fighting this disease. We have the ability to make real history here in the fight against cancer, and I hope you will support us however you can.
