Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
This is my first time joining this event which is a 2-day bike trek covering a distance of over 200 km from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA!! I'm pretty nervous, but with your help I'll be raising at least $2,500 in funds that will directly support leading clinicians, scientists, and researchers whose search for new discoveries and improved patient outcomes will have a real impact in our communities throughout the province, across Canada, and around the world (some added cheers and hugs of encouragement will surely benefit me too :-)).
There are many reasons why I have decided to join this year's Ride to Conquer Cancer. I, along with many others out there, have been personally affected by cancer's devastating effects. My grandfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer and fought a long hard battle until he passed away in 2014. He taught me a lot about life and through him I've learned the true meaning of strength. I watched him remain positive throughout the entire time of his recovery and treatments. He always kept a smile on his face and kept busy whether he was at home or in the hospital. He had even traveled to the Philippines to volunteer his time and visit those affected by catastrophic natural disasters in his home town while undergoing treatment. This man loved to give with all of his heart. I miss him so much!!
I started working in cancer research when I moved to Vancouver in the summer of 2015. First, in breast health coordinating a multisite, international clinical trial with the screening mammography program and in January of this year, I've joined Team OVCARE (which stands for Ovarian Cancer Research) in their valiant efforts to advance gynecologic cancer research not only here at BC Cancer Agency, but worldwide. I have met countless people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds who have shared both heartbreaking and triumphant personal stories with me. These patients, their families that support them, and all the researchers involved in breaking ground to new treatments and discoveries continue to inspire me everyday.
This ride is for them. And for my Papa Ludy.
With your support, we can work together to make a difference in thousands of people's lives.
