Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Last December, my Deputy Chief and good friend, was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of brain cancer. After a courageous, but short battle of 5 months and 9 days, he passed peacefully on May 12 2017. I visited Doug in hospital where he was fully engaged in his battle. While he fought tenaciously, the cancer beast fought back harder. While this war was personal, he never fought alone. TEAM DOUG emerged: encompassing medical staff, family, friends, community, and firefighters. This conglomerate offered support and encouragement to strengthen the resolve for Doug to fight.
As an onlooker, it was humbling not to be able to help as firefighters are in the helping profession. Doug spent his career giving to others - putting his life on the line, serving his community and being a leader in the Victoria department, as Chief. But as it goes with the brotherhood of the Fire Department, the same men and women who Doug once stood behind have rallied to stand behind him by committing to the RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER. Joining this team is my tangible way of showing my admiration for my friend and lending support for family and friends who continue to grieve without him in their lives. This is my way of honoring him and his battle. He was a good friend and I miss him.
Contribute to this powerful movement with a donation. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
Thank you in advance for your help.
