Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Hello! Welcome to my Ride to Conquer Cancer page! At the end of August I will ride my bike over 200kms in a two-day cycling journey from Vancouver to Seattle! Wow! That is farther than my normal cycling commute!
I am doing this ride to make a difference and bring hope to those who have cancer! Did you know that 1 in 3 of us will get cancer in our lifetime? Research into new and improved cancer treatments saves lives, but it takes money!
Over the last few years I have lost a handful of friends to cancer. These were people that I cared about, respected, and who were valued and cherished in their communities and by their families. I have also had friends, co-workers and relatives battle this disease - including some who are battling it right now. I want them to have every opportunity to beat this thing and hope that this is possible!
Have you known anyone who has fought cancer? Did you feel like there was nothing you could do? I want to DO something to help beat cancer.
Each and every one of us can make a difference, no matter how small. Donations add up, even small ones, and make a measurable impact.
To help maximize this effort I, and others, have come together to create a UVic entry in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. This team, UVic Peloton, is a way to engage with the campus community and encourage their support. Visit our team Facebook page for regular team updates and follow our activities as we prepare for this ride: https://www.facebook.com/UVicPeloton
You can help in three ways:
1. Spread the word: Ask your friends and family to visit this page and the Facebook page.
2. Donate: Make a donation. Encourage others to donate as well.
3. Ride next year: We will do this ride again in 2018. Join our team and ride with us! Send me a note and I’ll share more.
I thank you in advance for your help!
Note: As of July 31, I am encouraging those who are planning on donating to my ride to instead donate through the page of our fellow rider Kimberley Dray. She started fundraising later than I did and we need to boost her numbers. Her donation page is here:
All donations are 100% tax deductible (non-refundable and non-transferable). Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research, as well as improvements in care at the BC Cancer Agency. This brings hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
The catalyst for doing this ride was a visit I made to see a former boss and a friend – Doug Angrove. It was as I flew home from this visit that I decided I had to figure out a way to take that raw emotion and turn it into something positive. Doug spent his career in service to others, first in the Nanaimo Fire Department, and later at the Victoria Fire Department. Doug fought an aggressive brain tumour over a five month period before it took his life. He fought it the same way he lived – methodically, with determination, surrounded by a great team, and with humour. It was not easy for him and those that are closest to him. He was a great inspiration to me on many levels and a person I enjoyed exploring ideas with. I, like so many others, was deeply saddened by his passing and feel that loss often. I miss him and what he brought to our lives. I was honoured to visit Doug for a short time during his battle and to wear the “Team Doug - No One Fights Alone!” shirt. It is an excellent motto – No One Fights Alone! I will think of Doug as I pedal through the kilometres.
I believe that, together, we can make a difference!
