Welcome to my Personal Page! The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting BC Cancer Foundation, is a two-day, 200 km (125 mile) cycling journey, through the beautiful Pacific region taking place this summer Aug 26th & 27th 2017. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!
This is my very first ride to conquer cancer and I am very excited to be a part of such a wonderful event and even more excited to be welcomed onto Team Finn.
My journey with cancer started at a very young age when I found out that before I was born my grandfather Harry had died of lung cancer at the age of 51. I would never meet him, but he was a smoker right? Then my best friend and 1st cousin Carry-Anne died of cancer at the age of 6, I was 5. An anomaly right? Cancer didn't really touch my life again until the late 80's when my dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1988 at the age of 50. I wasn't living with him at the time. They removed his kidney and within a few weeks it seemed like he was back to regular life. That one didn't really affect me because he recovered so quickly. I look back and feel so blessed to have him still in my life, now 78!
In early 1998 my mom, Florence (55) was diagnosed with breast cancer. She could beat it right?, my Dad did. Well after a year and a half of fighting in June 1999 we lost her. I was devastated. Why couldn't she be one of those who beat it? In Nov 2001 we lost Aunt Peggy (59) to lung cancer followed by Aunt Loretta (57) in 2003 to kidney cancer. Our most recent loss was my Uncle Joe (57) in August 2016 also to kidney cancer. That was my mom's side of the family. On my dad's side; my dad survived his 1988 battle with kidney cancer. Then we lost his sister Aunt Jenny (69) in March 2011 and his brother, Uncle Everett (67) to throat cancer in Aug 2011. Most recently my Uncle Roy (69) has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
I am riding for those we have lost, but also for those of us still here as it feels like it's when and not if one of us will be diagnosed next. I have proudly joined Team Finn and have chosen to direct the funds raised to Pediatric Cancer. I was going to direct the funds to breast cancer in honor of my mom but with the wide variety of cancer types that has affected our family I thought if they solve childhood cancers than many cancers that affect us will also be cured. I know my mom and the rest of my family will be proud.
Please help me raise some money and awareness for this disease that continues to ravage people who are too young to be taken away from parents, children, family and friends! Any donation amount is appreciated so please help me with your $10, $25, $50 or $100 and we will continue to fight for a cure and better treatment.
Thank you in advance for all your help.
