Why am I taking part in 2017's Ride to Conquer Cancer?
There are so many reasons why I have chosen to join the Wheelin Warriors of the North and BC’s ride to conquer cancer.
I have struggled over the past few months to narrow down my thoughts and feelings towards Cancer and this event. I have lost too many family members to Cancer. I have lost extended family members, and friends to this awful disease. I have witnessed the emotional and physical pain of those who are battling cancer and the surviving family members of those that have passed. I have witnessed those that have overcome the tremendous odds and have survived. The more that we can do as individuals and as a community to provide emotional, physical and financial support to those in need and to the researchers that have dedicated their lives to finding cures, is why I ride.
This year I am dedicating my ride to the following people that are currently battling cancer: Brian Foot, Ian Mackay, Wayne Gagnon, Muriel Pidwerbeski, and Albert McDonald. In addition, I am riding for the memory of my Grandmother who passed when I was two, my grandmother and my uncles who passed when I was a teenager. I am riding for Greig Taylor who lost is life quickly in his battle with cancer. I am also riding for my dear friend Art who passed away peacefully two Christmases ago, where Cancer was a contributing factor to his end, amongst other things. The lessons taught from him, a fellow who lived 90 years, expressing to me the following: Live life without regret, pursue what you want in life, love your family and take chances.
When I feel, I cannot go any further and when my muscles and mind are fatigued, I will think of what he taught me, and I try to keep pushing, in his honor, those that I previously mentioned and the thought of those I don’t know who are suffering and their families.
Every peddle rotation, all my family members, friends and clients who have lost their battle with cancer power me forward and keeps me focused on moving forward.
With all my energy, I will ride even stronger than last year for all of those suffering.
With every dollar raised, every pedal, every breath, I know we are getting closer to a cure. I hope that we shall all witness this within our lifetime.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer presented by Silver Wheaton benefiting BC Cancer Foundation, is a two-day cycling journey, through the beautiful Pacific region taking place in the summer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real ipmpact will be made!
Contribute to this powerful movement with a donation. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
