Cycle For Life

Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Welcome to my Personal Page! The Ride to Conquer Cancer presented by Silver Wheaton benefiting BC Cancer Foundation, is a two-day cycling journey, through the beautiful Pacific region taking place in the summer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!
Contribute to this powerful movement with a donation. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
My story:
My life has been directly affected by cancer, has yours?
Most of the people I know have had a family member or friend that has had to deal with cancer. Both of my parents died from cancer and as a young man this was very hard to deal with. I could not understand why a disease that is so common could not be cured. What is more troubling is that 20 years later, there is still no cure. The treatments are greatly improved and the quality of life post diagnosis is much better, but there is a still a very long way to go.
In 1997 my youngest son developed a rather unusual blood disorder, at eight years of age. We spent the next nine years in and out of the oncology/haematology department of Vancouver’s Children’s Hospital. We had many stays that lasted months at a time; this gave my family a chance to develop relationships with many children and their families who were dealing with cancer. Watching these young people suffer through the ongoing treatments of cancer was a life changing event. There were blood tests, chemotherapy, and the occasional amputation. There were several occasions when my son lost one of his hospital friends to this disease. My wife and I would try to explain why the child died; this was always a challenge. We would try to explain it scientifically but the real reason is a lack funding for research and the development of treatments. I could go on with my story of how cancer has changed my life; I could tell you about the loss of my friend / sister-in-law to breast cancer. I could tell you about my friend that is currently part of an experimental treatment program for prostate cancer or my aunt who has been battling cancer for years. I would much rather tell you that there has recently been a cure for cancer, but I cannot do that! Not yet. There is still much work to do so I ask you to please be generous in helping me raise a minimum of $2,500.00 for this extremely important cause!
I will do the physical work and I ask all of you to be my support. Let’s conquer cancer together!
