Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
“Only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Franklin D. Roosevelt
I am proud to participate in the ride to conquer cancer and to be part of the KPMG team for the ride on August 26-27, 2017. In joining KPMG, a national sponsor for the last seven years, I feel that I am doing something about cancer, which is too big to ignore. Cancer affects everyone, and now, it affects someone close to me. My initial reaction was that of denial and avoidance. I slowly made the transition from fear of seeing my friend with cancer to wanting to make a difference. My first step was to confront my fear and listen to my friend Nadja’s story….
“Cancer is a familiar word to me. 35 years ago, my father was diagnosed with colon cancer and he passed away less than a year later. Since then, I have had two negative colonoscopies, regular mammograms and practiced breast self-examination (BSE). It was through BSE that I found a growth and I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a double mastectomy, chemo and now hormone blockers, I have the confidence to know that I am in good hands with my treatment. The difference between now and 35 years ago, is the extensive research that has been undertaken. I benefitted from those years of cancer research and the information regarding early detection. In addition, much of today's research information is available on-line. This enabled me to make better-informed decisions regarding my own diagnoses and treatment options. I cannot imagine going through this without this level of research based guidance. Despite this progress, there is still much more we need to understand and address. I strongly believe that with continued support of research, we will be able to combat cancer even more successfully. Thank you Antonio for riding, and to everyone else for their support.”
So now, I have taken my fear and turned it into a meaningful cause that I am proud of. I would like to raise money for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, which will benefit the BC Cancer Foundation and support leading clinicians, scientists, and researchers whose search for new discoveries and improved patient outcomes will have a real impact in our communities throughout the province, across Canada, and around the world.
