Welcome to Sandra's personal page... let's KICK CANCER'S BUTT!!
Welcome, friends, to my Personal Page!
As we all know, cancer seems to touch everyone. Each and every one of us has either been touched by it ourselves, or knows someone dear who has. My husband John has lost both of his parents to cancer. I've been through my own diagnostic process with regard to possible breast cancer, and came out one of the lucky ones thus far. It was an eye opening experience for me. Even our pets are not left untouched; during my career as a veterinarian I have lost all too many of my patients to cancer or helped them fight valiant battles to overcome it.
A young friend of mine, Nicky Rutledge was diagnosed at the age of 13 with a rare form of cancer which affects only children. Prior to his own diagnosis, Nicky was not unfamliar with this disease; he lost his own father and grandmother to cancer when he was very young. In spite of this, Nick dug in with one goal last year, and that was to "KICK CANCER'S BUTT. And that he did with gusto. A whopper of a year of radiation and chemo is now behind him and he is officially in full remission thanks to the amazing dedication and expertise of the doctors and nurses at BC Cancer Agency, and overflowing bucketloads of love and support from family and friends. This lovable dude powered through this battle, smiling all the way through, with unfaltering care for those around him. It's just who Nick is. We're so happy he's back on his feet, playing, going to school with his friends, and enjoying life as a kid again.
I'd also like to mention my dear friend Mo-Mo who, after bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy continues to smile warmly, spread positive energy around her, and finds solace in her dedication to yoga and meditation. Ryan Sparks, the brother of my longtime friend and honorary sister Samantha, unfortunately lost his own battle against cancer on May 8 of this year. He is remembered with fondness by all who knew him; his memorial service on June 24 was a moving reminder of the real and important things we often take so for granted in life.
Last year's Ride to Conquer Cancer was an incredible, powerful event; I'm proud to be able to participate again. Thousands of strangers, rolling along the miles united by a common cause, dedicated in one giant effort to make a difference for those they love, and perhaps also many others they've never known. AWESOME.
So. It's time to KICK CANCER'S BUTT!! In August 2017, I will embark on my second two day, 200km bicycle ride from Vancouver to Seattle in support of BC Cancer Foundation as part of The Ride to Conquer Cancer. My training for this epic ride starts now. You, my friends, can help me in this effort; pledge a donation of any amount, it matters not how small, using the link below. By doing so, you JOIN ME ON THIS RIDE in spirit. We'll form a team full of energy, enthusiasm, and hope in honor of handsome Nicky, Ryan, Mo-Mo, and all those near and dear to us who have been touched by this disease. We'll raise funds to help doctors, nurses and researchers come up with better ways to treat and CURE this, the emperor of all maladies.
Your help is very meaningful to me; thank you sincerely in advance.
