Why am I riding again?
I signed up last year, in what I deemed, a “weak moment”. Later, after finding the ride elevation maps online, I had doubts. For some reason I had envisioned it to be an easy downhill ride - perhaps because the route was North to South? But I trained, raised funds and completed the ride last August. I’ll admit I doubted I would finish on Day 2. The thought, “I probably won’t finish”, was foremost in my mind, and then that was followed by “I’ll just go to the next check point and then decide.” It wasn’t a planned strategy, but it got me to the finish line.
I joined Team Taylor and met some amazing and inspiring people. As we trained, we got to know each other as the kilometers added up. I’ve heard their personal stories of the impact that cancer has had on their lives. In so doing my personal reason for riding expanded from that of wanting to honor those in my life affected by this terrible disease, to embracing the goal of funding breakthrough research to bring quicker diagnostics, better treatments and increase the chances of survival.
My dad’s cancer was the impetus for signing up to ride in 2016. Dad is still in remission. In the past year, lovely gentle Aunt Carole lost a brief battle with cancer.
I signed up again. Why? Because Captain Steve and Team Taylor inspire me and because research is the reason Dad is in remission but mostly because cancer keeps taking the people we love.
