My third ride to support BC Cancer!
This year marks my third Ride!
I was motivated to support this great cause a few years ago when my aunt Mavis was losing her battle with breast cancer. I had done some volunteer work with the Canadian Cancer society and really felt like there was more I could do. When a friend suggested organizing a Ride team I jumped at the opportunity and haven't looked back.
Our first year we had a very small team (5 riders) and experienced an amazing storm that ended day one early and re routed the course. I remember riding into the strong headwinds and pushing so hard to keep going. It was humbling to see people with yellow flags (cancer survivors) on their bicycles doing the same thing. It really put it into perspective that I am so lucky to be healthy and that I should continue to push.
Year two we figured out sponsorship and more effective fundraising - some of you may remember our Rock Paper Scissors tournament and live auction at Lions pub, the Dunk tank event at Pac Rim and BBQs at soccer games. We had an amazing time on the ride and many of us left the weekend elated knowng we had helped to raise so many funds for BC Cancer. This year we've got an even better plan and we hope to raise even more money!
I believe that we are not far from a cure, and that these efforts to support BC Cancer will help to support the necesary research to make this happen.
