Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Welcome to my Personal Page! This is my fourth time participating in the The Ride to Conquer Cancer. The Ride benefits the BC Cancer Foundation, and is a two-day international cycling journey through the beautiful Pacific Northwest from Vancouver BC to Seattle WA.
Over the years, cancer has affected family members, friends, and colleagues, directly or indirectly. Cancer is responsible for over one-third of deaths in Canada. I have seen many tragically lose loved-ones to this disease, but I have also seen the courageous battles by those who are now survivors; both survivors and victims are my source of inspiration.
This is the fourth year I've participated in the Ride. Each year I try to make it personal by dedicating my efforts to individuals in my life who have influenced me, but who have been affected by cancer. Year 1 was a dedication to my dad, who died of prostate cancer. Year 2 was a dedication to my mother, an uncle, and a cousin, all of whom were affected by cancer. Year 3 I joined the Brainiacs Team and rode in memory of my former colleague's wife, Altair (like the star), who lost her battle with cancer.
This year I am riding to honour the memory of a former colleague, and a friend, Don Roberts, who passed away only recently, in early July. He was only one year older than I am, and leaves behind his wife and two daughters, as well as his loving family. This year, I have requested that the funds I raise through the Ride to Conquer Cancer be directed to ‘Partners in Discovery Priority Projects’ category. It is from this fund that the Personalized Onco-Genomics (POG) program received its initial backing and money from this fund continues to support the ground-breaking clinical trials in the POG program. I hope you will decide to support my fundraising efforts.
According to the Canadian Cancer Statistics, 171,000 new cases of cancer and 75,300 deaths from cancer occurred in 2009. The information also shows that over 45% of men and 40% of women will develop cancer in their lifetime and 1 in all 4 Canadians will die of cancer. That's why I'm riding. To do something BIG about cancer. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.
There have been so many incredible advancements made in cancer screening and early detection and diagnosis, treatment, care, and support in the last decade. The BC Cancer Agency is leading the way with genetic sequencing to develop cancer treatment programs tailored to the individual, rather than relying on 'off the shelf' treatment programs - pretty amazing technology that wasn't available even 5 years ago, but requiring millions of dollars of research funding to achieve. I strongly believe that there will be a day when cancer is beaten. Even though there seems to be a never-ending depressing number of setbacks, the number of success stories continues to increase, and that’s something to hold on to.
Help me reach my financial goal by donating. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
