This is where we kick cancer's ass, two times!
Me - I was diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymphoma in 2006. Various doctors, specialists, and tests revealed nothing at first. But as I watched that one lymphnode grow in my neck and then watched as other lymphnodes began growing in my neck, it was apparent that I was either turning into my own version of a super hero or something was clearly wrong.
A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis and four rounds of chemotherapy (CHOP-R) began at the end of March, 2006. That's my hand in the picture as the nurse began my first treatment. As my amazing oncologist said, "I am going to try and kill you, to keep you alive."
11 years later, I'm still cancer free!
Her - My fiance's story is more recent. In October 2015, she was diagnosed with Gestational Trophoblastic Neoplasia (GTN), a rare uteran cancer which was the result of a molar pregnancy. That was a total kick in the shins for us. Nicola underwent over 5 months of chemotherapy and is enduring terrible side effects, but thankfully she is currently in remission!
So, I am riding in honour of my cure, in honour of the fight that Nicola put up, and to all the family, friends, and unknown friends who have fought and either won or lost their battles.
When you get diagnosed with cancer there are usually two outcomes: you are either a survivor or not. Lucky for us, we are both survivors. I would like to think a lot of this has to do with the great work of the staff at the BC Cancer Agency.
Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients including those called Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Uncle, Aunt, Child, Wife, Husband, Grandparent, and/or Friend.
Thank you in advance for your help and let's find a cure.
