Why I am riding this year
While upgrading his tennis game my uncle started to develop a sore back and one day at home he collapsed in pain and could not move. After several ambulance trips to the hospital where he was discharged each time with a diagnosis of muscle sprain, the spine clinic doctors at VGH suspected something more serious and an MRI showed that a vertebra in his upper back had collapsed as a compression fracture.
Uncle Michael had emergency back surgery and could walk again but the doctors made a diagnosis of a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. It is incurable but manageable. It affects bone strength and more commonly affects men in their late 60s.
Uncle Michael had six months of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. We are all very lucky that he responded extremely well to treatment and is back to work full time and he has no more treatments on the horizon. He hopes to return to tennis later this year!
