My 5th and Final Ride
Hello friends and family!
Welcome to my 5th and final year making the 200+ kms journey from Vancouver to Seattle in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, with my team at Cap's Westwood Cycles! I get my golden helmet this year!
A little background....My first diagnosis of breast cancer was October 2008, and then I was told the cancer had metastasized to my liver in July 2011. That oncologist told me I had about 2 years left to live......I AM STILL HERE. I have proven that doctor wrong (plus I changed doctors!).
It was rough for the first while, but then, after about 2 years of ups and a few downs, I decided to take control and only have POSITIVE thoughts! I got on with my life! I am living life and enjoying my time (however long it is) here on earth! Life is too short for regrets! I have my eldest daughter's wedding this summer, and my youngest daughter is graduating high school in June! And then my final Ride to Conquer at the end of August.
I am still taking chemo (Xeloda) and have been on that treatment for just over a year now. This is the 5th type of chemo they have given me in the last 5 and a half years, as some stop working because your body builds a resistance to it after a while. This is an oral chemo, 6 pills a day for 2 weeks straight, then a 2 week break. Then I start the cycle all over again. Sure, sometimes it gets downright depressing to always have to take drugs to keep the cancer from growing and spreading, but at least I AM HERE. And this drug isn't too hard on me physically.
In the last 4 years I have raised approximately $20,000 thanks to all of YOU! I decided last year that I would participate one more time as a rider, and after that I would volunteer for this great organization. This is where I need all of your HELP.... I would LOVE to beat any of my previous year's goals, (since it's the last time I'm asking...) by making this year's goal $10,000! So I would like to ask you all to really dig deep and consider making a bigger donation than ever to my fundraising goal. Please share my page with your friends and families too!
Going forward from here, I plan to continue supporting the BC Cancer Foundation, because without them and all of their discoveries, I know many of us wouldn't be here.
The Ride has many sponsors for this event, so that way ALL THE MONEY raised by donations goes to research and funding for Cancer treatments! So basically, you will be helping me with my ongoing treatments and others like me.
I hope you can all support me this year!
With warmest regards
Odette – The Cancer Warrior!
