Damara's reasons for riding
Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
this is my 5th year of participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. I can't quite believe it. I am so very grateful that I can report that the amazing treatment options that are available to us here in BC have helped both my Mom and my friend Rachel overcome cancer this past year. My mom had ovarian cancer and went through some very harrowing chemo treatments. I was fortunate to be able to be with her for each of those long days at the clinic. Her last treatment was in October 2016 and since then she has been cancer free. Ovarian cancer is a nasty one, and so we do know that it could return, but that is not what we will focus on. We will focus on her resilience and the grace we've been given to walk alongside her through what has been a very difficult time for our family. And now she's back at the gym and her hair has grown back and she's cuter than ever!
And Rachel, my brave friend, kicked Hodgkins Lymphoma to the curb with authority! She made it through chemo with her usual strength and resilience, although of course there were many tough days. But she is also cancer free and we are so very, very grateful.
But I also know there are other stories with different endings out there. My friend Ruth lost her mom to cancer several years ago and misses her dearly. So I will ride for her. My friend Kira also had to say good-bye to her mother much too early due to cancer. I will ride for her, too. I never met my dad's mother because she died young, younger than I am now, because of cancer. So I will ride for my grandma. And there are, unfortunately, many, many more.
I'd like to keep doing my little part in this fight against this nasty disease. We just can't stop now. This ride is symbolic, the actual event is important and meaningful, and the funds raised through this ride are going towards research that smart people are conducting to improve treatment options and maybe even find a cure. Wouldn't that be amazing?! A cure!
Will you join me by encouraging me to keep training and fundraising, by giving what you can yourself, or maybe even by joining our team and riding with us?
