16 years ago, some of you may or may not know my family had one of our dearest members diagnosed with cancer of the liver and stomach. Gavin, my sister Cindy’s little boy, had five tumors in his liver, stomach and a spot that had spread to his lung. He had a 33% survival rate. Gavie was in for the battle of his life and boy did he fight! He had to go through many bouts of chemotherapy and finally surgery to remove the cancer that had invaded his little body.
During the time of Gavin’s cancer, I was living in Vancouver. My thoughts and prayers were constantly with him and my family. I felt so helpless being so far away and felt compelled to do something. So, I decided to run my first ever half marathon and raised over $5000 for cancer in his honour.
Fast forward 16 years and we discovered some harrowing news. Gavin’s cancer had returned, this time in his rectum. We later learned that he carries a gene mutation (APC) that means he is high risk for developing large umbers of precancerous polys in his colon and rectum. Also, during childhood there is an increased risk for hepatoablstoma a kind of liver cancer that Gavin had when he was 15 months old.
Gavin has been through several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. He had to endure a massive surgery where they removed his rectum and colon entirely to rid of the cancer. The surgeons then created a “J” shaped reservoir, (Jpouch), out of his small intestine as an alternate way for him to store and pass stool.
Gavin has now completed his final round of chemo. He is still in a great deal of pain, experiences extreme fatigue and sickness. He just recently had a full body scan and our prayers were finally answered! The cancer has been rid of his body for now.
I am still in Vancouver and again feel compelled to do something big to end this fight against cancer. I have enrolled in the Ride to Conquer Cancer a two-day cycling journey, Vancouver to Seattle. My goal is to raise $2500+ in hopes to finding a cure to end cancer so my nephew no longer has to undergo this battle. This is when I turn to you. Please consider supporting me in this journey.
Contribute to this powerful movement with a donation. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
Thank you in advance for your help.
