Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
In 2015, they pushed the ride from June to August which you would think would have given me more time for things like organizing my fund raising, training, updating my web page ...... If I recall I got in 70 k of training in 2015 and did not finish my fundraising till after the ride. In 2016 I got in 5 rides totalling 150 k. It is now July 16, 2017 and my bike has not moved since last August and I am getting my fund raising started the latest ever!
My patented training regime seems to keep coming up with same results, this riding thing hurts and I am not 20 anymore! The hamstring injury and overdeveloped belly did not stop me from finishing last year though and I am hoping the torn rotator cuffs will not interfere this year! Whenever it feels a bit tough on the ride, the common refrain comes up "Yes tough go at times, but nothing compared to the fight that Cancer victims bravely face every day."
I have signed up again for the Ride to Conquer Cancer and the purpose of the ride is just that, to ask for money to Fund Research to Conquer Cancer. The two day ride from Vancouver to Seattle raised $7.1 million in funds for the BC Cancer Foundation via 1,687 riders in 2016. Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care made possible through BC Cancer Foundation, a leader in cancer research and care.
The point is the people riding didn’t raise the money, people like you donated and the ride is just a means to the end. It is not about the bike, not about the ride the riders and not about me. To me, the riders in this event are just an excuse for people to donate money towards the fight to Conquer Cancer. What was interesting after doing the ride five times now, is how many "Yellow Flags" you see on the ride. These are riders who are cancer survivors. There were more last year than year before and the number of kids sporting flags was impressive (though at the same time being a little scary). The point is the money raised is actually helping.
I think all of us have had friends, and probably family who have had to deal with at a minimum, and some that have been claimed by cancer. This is a reason for many to donate to this cause. What has really got my attention in the last few years is how many friends and family I have that have fought and more and more who have conquered cancer. It is highly motivating to contribute to this cause when over the last twenty years we have seen such improvements in people’s lives that have been touched by cancer.
I know everyone is pulled by many causes and rarely do we have money sitting around without an endless list of possible misadventures for it, but if you have been giving thought to donating to the battle to conquer cancer I would be more than happy to be the excuse for triggering you to take action.
If you choose to donate, donate what feels right for you. There is no minimum though I assume there is no maximum either!
PS: Thanks to all those that supported me over the last 5 years and provided the necessary guilt to get back in the saddle!
PPS: OK, now Aug 15 and i have ridden 3 times and only been hit by a car once! Total km less than 60 but max heart rate was below 175 so all good!
