My 7thYear Participating - Another Year, More Reasons To Ride - Hannah - Age 25, Non Hodgkins Lymphoma - Stage 4
This will be the 7th year that I have participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. This year I will be riding with Team ICBC, and once again will ride with my wife, Corinna, who is a Cancer Survivor. I usually try to write a long letter expressing my reasons for riding, this year my motivation is simple and clear. I ride because I know the money we raise makes a difference. I have included some of the advances that are directly related to the money raised in the Ride to Conquer Cancer over the past 9 years.
Each year I ride for a different reason, or motivation. This year, I am riding because I honestly believe that the money raised for research in British Columbia has been making a difference. The key to survival is early detection, research, development and treatment, and a bit of luck. Fortunately, for my family, Corinna has been fortunate that with early detection and treatment, she has been cancer free for the past 5 years. I do remember those that were not as fortunate, such as my mother, who had lung cancer, and my good friend Tom Davies, who had Leukemia.
I recently turned 50, and find that in the past 10 years, I know so many people that have been touched in some way by cancer. The goal is to increase survival rates in all types of cancers, so that families do not have to cope with losing loved ones too early in life.
I have told myself that I will continue to do the ride for at least 1 more year, to achieve my 5 year goal. Each year, I have another reason to continue, but I admit this year, it has been more difficult to focus on fundraising, which is more challenging than the training. But, then I have to remember the positive outcomes, the times where early detection and technology, science and amazing doctors and nurses help win the fight. I rode last year with Doug Smith, who has fought cancer more than once, and who is now in remission again.
My wife Corinna will also be riding with me again this year, as a Breast Cancer survivor, which makes me very proud of her and her achievement. We crossed the finish line together the past two years, and it was a real achievement for her, and a moment I will cherish always.
My commitment each year is to raise a minimum of $2500.00 that will go to cancer research and promote the development of early detection, treatments and methods for reconstruction. These advancements will in turn give cancer victims and their families Hope, and the courage to fight, and ultimately, I pray, to Survive. Each story where the end chapter includes survival, rather than sadness, is worth so much. This I know first hand. But, the money raised brings renewed hope and huge advances in research. We met a woman last year who spoke, and was told directly, there is nothing left for us to do, prepare youself for the worst. A new area of research with G-nomes (which I know very little about) working on advancements funded directly by the RTCC worked and she was on her way to remission, living past the date they previously told her she would die.
This is where I need your help. I need to ride. I NEED to fight and I NEED your help. I NEED to raise my $2500.00 dollar requirement so I can ride my bike (this year again with my wife Corinna) for 250 km and do something to support those fighting, and those that will have to fight, by raising money for early detection and medical breakthroughs. I don't know what more I can do, but I know that I need to do something. I know that the money raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer is used for research into early detection and for the ultimate goal of finding some way to successfully Conquer Cancer. Please help me by supporting my ride through your donations of money. I know there are lots of worthy things to support, and, it really doesn't matter to how little you can give, I will take it and I will appreciate it. $5? Thank you. $1. Thank you. $50, Thanks so much. More? Definitely honoured. There are places to find information about this worthy fundraising cause and where the money goes.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and if you are able, to support my endeavour by donating money. Thanks in advance, you are changing lives, including mine.
