Dan's Ride to Conquer! Support Team Way Hey Hey! and the BC Cancer Foundation
Please Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer®
Thanks to everyone who has supported us through donation or encouragement for The Ride to Conquer Cancer in the past. We are riding for the eighth(!!) consecutive year in 2017 and hope that we can count on your continued support. We will ride 245km on August 26-27 with the objective of raising funds to support research, education and care provided by the BC Cancer Foundation. The kind of research and care that means my wife continues to be able to ride along with me, 11 years after diagnosis and 11 years on daily chemotherapy.
We signed on for our first ride as two individuals in 2010, not sure what we were getting into, but knowing that it was for a cause that has made a difference in our lives and in the lives of many of our friends and family, and knowing that we weren't riding alone. Our ride family, Team Way Hey! Hey! has raised over $500,000 in the past seven years. Let's keep that legacy rolling. Please support us through donation or sign on to join Team Way Hey! Hey! on the ride (Yes, you can ride that far... It is a ride, not a race. You won't be riding alone, and TWHH cross the finish as a team every year.). Rain or shine, we smile through the ride and celebrate life in camp and at the finish.
Wondering about the team name... here's the story:
In April 2006, Selina entered the hospital for what should have been routine surgery, but was diagnosed with a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST) that had metastasized. Thanks to a stubborn constitution (yes, that's a compliment), fortuitous timing, a quick thinking surgeon, and what was (at the time) a new targeted chemotherapy that BC Cancer Agency was able to provide (and continues to provide daily), she is healthy and continues to ride. The initial diagnosis and months that follow are a difficult and dark time, when life seems to be turned upside down. We both found balance and perspective in the lyrics of the Great Big Sea song, Ordinary Day - "Way hey hey, it's just an ordinary day, and it's all your state of mind, at the end of the day, you just have to say it's all right... cause I've got a smile on my face and I've got four walls around me". And we had the support and care of the BC Cancer Agency. That's why we are Team Way Hey Hey! for the Ride to Conquer. We are riding for an ordinary day. With a positive state of mind, a smile, it's all right.
Our story is not the only one on our team of riders or among the other teams that we ride with. Every rider has their own reason for participating and their own story. Our team is lead across the finish line by our survivors, who ride the entire distance with a yellow flag on their bike. Following our yellow flaggers are friends and family who each ride for their own reasons, in support of or in memory of people in their lives. Each TWHH member with a reason and with passion.
Thank you for your support! It makes a difference.
