A Ride of Epic Proportions: Version 9
."Number 9... Number 9... Number 9..."
As I approach my 9th Ride to Conquer Cancer, I've begun to ask myself again why I ride. But, the truth is, I don't think that there is ONE reason. With every year that I climb back onto my bike, I find have new reasons for riding AND some reasons carryover into later years. I ride because there is always a reason to ride and to continue riding.
I ride for Finn Sullivan, the boy who lived despite battling cancer. I ride for his parents, Patrick and Samantha, his sister Sarah, and his twin brother Baird. I ride for Melissa, Rae, Barb and Doug, Yahri, Cathy, Sussan, Matthais, and too many others because I miss them. I ride for Kevin Cameron; a cancer survivor, friend and mentor and who should still be out on the road. I ride for Xavier Pelletier.
I ride for Team Finn, Riders for Ryders, Motley Crew, Team OvCaRe, Team A&W, Team Way Hey Hey, The Brainiacs, To The Max, Team Super Dave, The Melan Heads, and the Wheelin' Warriors of the North. I ride for new and returning riders. I ride for my teammates. I ride for friends. I ride for family. I ride for friends that became family.
I ride for hope and change. I ride to give doctors, nurses, and researchers a change to do their best work. I ride to make sure that everything that CAN be done, WILL be done. I ride to keep friends and families together. I ride to stop needing to ride.
I ride for smiles. I ride for years. I ride for the future. I ride for the past. I ride for redemption. I ride because I need to know that no matter what I face in the year, I will have two days of run, jump, bounce, sing, dance, love, smile, and ride. I ride to talk. I ride to listen. I ride so that when you tell me "oh, I could never do that", I can say "I've done it 8 times. You can most definitely do it."
I ride so that we can do this together.
