For A Boy
Five Years Later -- Yesterday
Eight years ago, my friends asked me to go for a ride with them. A ride for Finn. A ride for other Finn's. A celebration.
And from there to here.
So much accomplished. So much to do.
A few years after, the young daughter of a fellow Finnster earned her angel wings.
I hear that too much. Too often. We are changing that, not fast enough, but we are.
My reasons for Riding remain and my poem from the 2009 Ride rings as true today as when I wrote it.
WHY I RIDE:
I ride for Finn.
I ride because one of the last things Finn said to me was "daddy, you have a big belly".
I ride because my heart aches with loss.
I ride to change other futures.
I ride because 65 miles is not enough miles for the number of anaesthetics' Finn endured.
I ride for a lost friend.
I ride for a brother's silent tears.
I ride for a sister's wise sadness.
I ride for a mother's grief and her search for answers.
I ride because I can't hold his hand anymore and I want to, I so desparately want to.
I ride so others don't have to cry these tears.
I ride for purple and pink and for sunshine coming through the window.
I ride for full moons and Finnrises.
I ride for drum sticks and feral dancing.
I ride for better answers and fewer questions.
I ride for life. I ride for living.
I ride because I can,
and maybe, just maybe, someday they will tell me that someone can because I ride.
A year after my poem, many things remain the same. My heart still aches with loss, and I know that shall never pass.
I still Ride for Finn. Because he earned that.
I still Ride for Baird, my drumsticks, because his tears sting way more than my own.
I still Ride for Sarah my feral dancer. Sarah who is counting the years to her 16th birthday as am I. She because she wants to Ride. I because I don't want her to. Not because she won't be able to but because I truly want to end this Ride.
So I Ride. Because I can. Because I have to. I Ride because I believe that one bead at a time we are making a difference.
So donate to me. Donate to someone. Be a part of this.
And if you are not in a position to donate (and I understand that many are not), take a minute to learn about a remarkable boy. Learn about what he achieved and how he achieved it. Take a moment and vist www.TeamFinn.com.
Thank you for the time, and in the meantime, Run Jump Bounce Dance Sing Love Smile and Ride.
