2017 Ride to Conquer Cancer
I recently celebrated my 47th birthday. Actuaries tell me that, statistically speaking, I should live into my mid-80’s. Of course, this assumes that I stay healthy and am not stricken by a fatal accident or illness.
In 1997 my mother-in-law Jung-Eun Kim celebrated her 47th birthday. She was fit, healthy and active, golfing 3-4 times a week, often hitting from the men’s tees! However, she soon heard the words that we all dread: “You have cancer”. Her cancer was an aggressive brain tumor menacingly called Glioblastoma Multiforme. Based on statistics, her doctors gave her 6 months to live, but the availability of new innovative treatments at the time and enrollment in a clinical trial at the BC Cancer Agency enabled her to fight off the disease for 2 years; precious time that she would not have otherwise had with family and friends.
Recent data suggests that nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will hear the words “You have cancer” in their lifetimes. Given the amazing progress that cancer researchers have made, funded by donations like yours, these words need not be a death sentence. Improvements in treatments mean that many cancers are treatable and curable with more and more Canadians hearing the words “You had cancer.” This is a tangible payoff of the investment we have made in research.
This year will be the 9th year that I have led our PH&N Horny Goats team. In the last 8 years our corporate team has raised an amazing $3.5M to fund cancer research. The ride has become an important connection to my personal journey to fight cancer.
For the last 5 years I have served on the Board of the BC Cancer Foundation and for the last year I have been Chair. I am honoured to serve in this role and build upon the legacy of those who have come before me. I’ve seen the tragedy of lost loved ones, but also the success of research and new treatments, like the cutting edge VERO radiotherapy equipment which delivers precise radiation to tumors. This time lapse video shows the installation of this $6.5M machine, funded entirely through philanthropy https://vimeo.com/176217264.
I have had the opportunity to spend time with the brilliant scientists and clinicians at the BC Cancer Agency and witness firsthand the world class research being conducted right here in BC. My confidence in the progress we are making means that for the fifth consecutive year, I will match your donations up to $25,000.
Thank you for your generosity
