In 2015 Valerie Roland decided to give back to the research and support that had helped her endure a 5 year struggle with Multiple Meyeloma. She formed Team Storm and she, two brothers and two friends raised over $34,000.
In 2016 her husband Dayne joined the team and they rode in the Calgary Ride to Conquer Cancer. They raised over $22,000 last summer. Valerie had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring prior to the ride. Her radiation oncologist said she could ease her pain and perhaps give her a little more quality time. Valerie said "I just want to make it to the ride." The oncologist thought the odds were pretty good. Val reconsidered. "Well if I make it to the ride, I will want to make it to Christmas."
Valerie is an RN and had given herself an IV and bought a few bags of saline to give her the energy she needed. She started and finished each day with the team.
Valerie passed away on December 8th 2016 with friends and family at her side including 3 of the 5 team members.
Please help support the researchers that on 3 seperate occaisions provided a new treatment when her cancer had reappeared and none was available.
Contribute to this powerful movement with a donation. Funds raised through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will support life-saving research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency, bringing hope to cancer patients in B.C. and beyond.
Thank you in advance for your help.
The Ride is an epic, two-day cycling event taking place in August that spans over 200 kilometers!
The money we raise for the Ride to Conquer Cancer will benefit the BC Cancer Foundation and support leading clinicians, scientists, and researchers whose search for new discoveries and improved patient outcomes will have a real impact in our communities throughout the province, across Canada, and around the world.
Since 2009, the Ride has raised $70 million for the BC Cancer Foundation and is B.C.’s largest cycling fundraiser.
This can be your opportunity to do something challenging and rewarding in so many ways. And you won’t do it alone. We will be doing training rides, helping each other fundraise and generating awareness for critical cancer research.
Please donate to us or join us. Thank you in advance for your support!
