The 2017 Don Cockburn Memorial Ride
In November 2016, after a 9 year battle with Colon Cancer, team founder Don Cockburn passed away. Not even 2 years ago, Don, son Bob along with his brother Dale, friend and breast cancer survivor Cheryl and her husband Mike and PMH volunteer Dee formed the original Team Cockburn and rode the 200km Ride to Conquer Cancer in June of 2015 to give something back to the organization that had helped extend his time with us. After the 2015 ride, Don had such a great experience that he said "one more time" and registered to ride again, this time with a much bigger team including his daughter Sam, his son Mike and wife Tina. Unfortunately by June 2016, Don had lost too much strength to complete the ride, so Team Cockburn, now 18 strong rode for him.
Don was a patient at PMH over the course of his battle with cancer. We are so thankful for the treatment and quality of care that he received there. We know that we are fortunate to have had as much time with him as we did and that was due in no small measure to the advances in cancer treatments funded through donations like those that support the ride. Over its 10 year history in Canada, the Ride has raised almost $350 million. In the past 2 years, Team Cockburn has raised nearly $100K thanks to the support of countless friends, family and colleagues.
Don always said "the ride isnt the tough part, the fundraising is." We appreciate that fact even more without him helping this year. He always worked very hard to ensure that every member of his team raised enough money to ride and so any donation large or small in memory of Don or any other loved one lost to cancer is most appreciated.
