Strength in numbers has never mattered more than in the fight against cancer.
It has been over 5 years since my husband Bob passed away from lymphoma and we still find it hard to believe and comprehend that our beloved Bob is really gone. Bob was first diagnosed with cancer in April 2007. Bob believed if he could hold on long enough a cure would be found for his b-cell non-hodgkins lymphoma. Unfortunately, time was not on our side. Sadly Bob passed away on February 7, 2012
Our daughters Maddy and Jacquie, Bob's family and close friends and I want to make a difference for those of us who will have the misfortune to have to deal with cancer in the future.
In 2012 Bob's only sibling David Hicks and I established the Hicksfire team and rode in June 2012 in the Ride to Conquer Cancer in memory of Bob. It was very cathartic – both training and riding - and together we were able to raise an astonishing $38,850 from 171 wonderful supporters.
In September 2013 I joined the board of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer – a federally funded organization committed to reducing the impact of cancer on Canadians. I am now the Chair of the Finance & Audit Committee (surprise!).
We wanted to continue the legacy in Bob's memory so in June 2013, June 2014 and June 2015 we rode again. Joined by Bob's and my daughters Maddy and Jacquie, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, god sons and Bob's many friends on our team riding together with our memories of Bob we achieved our goal of growing the Hicksfire team to more than 50 strong last in the past years.
In June 2013 with 50 riders we were the 8th highest fundraising team, raising just shy of $200,000 and in June 2014 with 50 riders again we surpassed that total raising over $200,000. In 2015 we raised some $140,000 bringing our 4 year fundraising $632,000. In 2016 teaming up with dear friend Craig Brown and family our team grew to be over 100 members we surpassed all our goals. We were the 2nd highest fundraising team, raising an astonishing $427,000, I was the 6th highest individual fundraiser and most importantly, we surpassed our 5 year goal of raising $1million!
Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at The Princess Margaret Hospital, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.
In June 2017 we will ride again!
It will be an emotional ride again. But the training and riding together and the support from you is all a huge help in the emotional journey we are on.
With your generosity, a real impact will be made in fighting cancer! Please contribute to this history-making event with a donation. Thank you in advance for your support. I know Bob would be proud of the legacy he has left and the benefit it will be for future cancer patients.
