Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer
Hello friends and family,
Welcome to my Personal Page! This year my partner, Stacey Mendelson, and I have decided to do the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer in memory of my amazing wife, Shelley Steiner. Shelley passed away in May 2015 after a difficult battle with lung cancer. My wife was a devoted daughter, wife and mother. She was also a lawyer and Olympian for Canada in both the Los Angeles and Seoul Olympic games on the women’s fencing team. Shelley was a non-smoker.
I want to raise awareness of the changing face of lung cancer. In 2015, two women I know, my wife and her friend, Marla, were taken by this vicious disease; both were women in their 50's, physically fit, and non-smokers. This diagnosis is often missed or diagnosed too late by doctors who assume that shortness of breath and chest pain in non-smoking women is asthma. My goal is to encourage women to self-advocate and insist on a chest X-ray if their symptoms persist for more than 1 month.
We will be riding 230km from Montreal to Quebec City over 2 days in July to benefit the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital. Funds raised in The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Jewish General Hospital.
It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made.
Please contribute to my efforts with a donation. I will persist in my journey to honour Shelley’s wish: to educate other women on the symptoms, the changing patient profile and their role in the early diagnosis of lung cancer.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful summer.
