Year #7 ride to conquer cancer
In 2017, this will mark my 7th year completing the Enbridge ride to Conquer Cancer along the beautiful St-Lawrence River from Montreal to Quebec City. This ride challenges me physically and emotionally for a great cause. The journey from the first 5cents I raise to the finish line of our 250km bicycle ride is very satisfying and sometimes pulls my heart strings as I know I am making a difference.
This is why I ride! :
My name is Kenneth Hawke and I was born and raised in Montreal, QC by two loving and caring parents (William and Lorraine). I have been doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer since 2011. I was able to create wonderful and lasting memories in the time I had with them in my life.
My life was turned upside down when cancer took three precious people from me at a very important time in my life in a very short period of time. On October 8th, 2006, I had to say goodbye to my father/best friend who died of prostate cancer at the young age of 57. A short 18 months later on April 24th, 2008, kidney cancer took my loving mother away at the age of 54. Unfortunately, 13 months after that, I lost my best friend’s mother to Leukemia.
Losing both parents in my early twenties made me see life in a totally different light. These sudden changes brought me into deep thought and reflection about where to go now with this sense of emptiness.
I decided that I had two choices:
#1 - Feel sorry for myself
#2 - Do something about it and get involved to fight cancer.
I chose option 2 and I have been making a difference by:
- Raising funds
- Car washes
- Hosting party events
- Displayed donation cans in stores while bagging groceries
- Have support from different companies (Hype)
- Passing the word around to everyone I meet
- Share my story
I have been working very hard to raise money to find a cure for Cancer and I will fight with everything I have in me to help find a cure to this killer disease. Everyone should contribute for the love ones that we have lost, or are going through it or might have it in the future.
Please consider contributing to this history-making event with a donation. Funds raised in The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Segal Cancer Center at the Jewish General Hospital of Montreal. Together we can make a difference!
